We'll Always Have Summer

Siargao Island, Philippines

During the Labor Day weekend, my high school friends and I spent 6 hours on the road and 4 hours on a boat to reach one of the country's gems, Siargao Island. Although I just got back from a weekend trip in Cebu and Iloilo, I couldn't say no to this trip and to my friends. They've been dying to go to the island since last year.

Visiting Siargao for the first time last year made me fall in love. This time around, I fell further. I couldn't believe that it was possible to fall even deeper in love with a place. So I said, "Can we make this a yearly trip?" and they all nodded in agreement.

Even though I've said it before, I'm saying it again: Siargao Island's beauty is petrifying in a good way. I always find myself pausing for a moment so I could take it all of it in. Sometimes I pause to ask myself if what I'm seeing is true. Most of the time, I pause to thank the Great Artist.

Time seems to slow down in the island. Everyone and everything seems to be in tune with their own timing. Both the locals and expats are friendly and they're always ready to tell you stories about the island or their adventures. The food is scrumptious, the water is crystal clear, and the sunsets are always magical. Siargao's beauty is the kind that one can't encapsulate in words or photographs. It must be fully experienced.

Our days were spent hopping from one island to the next, swimming in blue waters, biking from our place to the souvenir shops and to a public beach, and indulging in good food. All of our worries with work were left back home. We were there, basking in the present.

Sure, there are other gorgeous places out there and I can't wait to see them if time and budget permits. Those places might have beauty that's even more stupefying, but this island definitely holds a special place in my heart.
