All-Time Favorite Style Inspirations
Back when I was in high school, I had no idea about what kind of look I was going for every time I dress up to go out of the house. For me, it was always comfort over style. Gimme a cool shirt, a pair of denim jeans and sneakers, and I'm all good. In fact, I wore just that (plus a gray hoodie) during my second year Christmas party. "What the hell?" right? I'll spare you from all the horror by not adding a photo of it here.
As I got exposed to different styles growing up (thanks to the internet), I've slowly evolved from "comfort over style" to "comfort and style." Though I still love the classic shirt + jeans + sneakers combo, I became a bit too careful about mixing and matching. I started to learn about stuff like what kind of color suits me, and what kind of prints look good on me. It wasn't long before I figure out whose style became my inspiration.
Out of all the style pegs in the world, these women are my all-time favorites:
Alexa Chung is a world-renown fashion model, TV presenter, contributing editor at Vogue (source:Wikipedia), and an all-around goofball (check out videos of her on Youtube!). There's no doubt that Alexa takes the first spot on this list because I am so in love with her minimalist "geek meets chic" style. She embodies "comfort and style." I chose a photo of her wearing dark blue jeans, striped long sleeves, and Chuck Taylors for this because I think it's super easy to copy. It's perfect for those (rare) cold days here in the Philippines. That A-Line Denim skirt, white blouse, and gray cardigan combo is one of my favorite looks too!
When it comes to the red carpet and the runway, the Dior dress she wore during the 2014 Milan Fashion Week is on my top-pick. I'm a sucker for floral prints which is why these looks won my heart :) Geez. If only I won't be tagged as crazy walking around the city wearing clothes like that! (Lol as if I can afford Dior) Alexa also became one of the best-dressed celebrities during the British Style Awards last year, and she donned the gorgeous Erdem floral-print dress. Classy AF!
It's a no-brainer that this independent and classy lady named Emma Watson is on this list. I loved her back in 2002 when she wore a white long-sleeve off-shoulder top and b&w printed skirt during the London premiere of Scooby Doo. I love her even more now that she's maintaining a minimalist but classy and polished look while doing all these incredible roles and kick-ass humanitarian programs.
Her layered look in the first photo is something that I want to achieve someday haha :) Maybe I'll steal this look when I visit a nature park somewhere in the highlands or running some errands in the city on a cold, rainy day. Oh, and of course, a printed skirt paired with a plain white polo is one of those combos that never gets old.
Of course, Emma's red carpet looks are something I'm always looking forward to whenever a Hollywood event comes along. Whether it be The Oscars or a party hosted by Vanity Fair, I always scour through online media sites to check out what she wore and sometimes hope that she'd land on a best-dressed list. Her 2015 MET Gala, 2014 British Style Awards, and 2016 MET Gala (not in photo) looks are my current favorites. To be honest, I even tried to copy the white jumpsuit she wore for my Senior's Night Party in college, but unfortunately, I couldn't find one and I know it was hard to pull off haha!
When I searched through Pinterest and Google Images for Dakota Johnson's casual outfits, I found myself thinking "Oh that's me. That's the look I want," and "Looooove her look." I like to describe her style as "tough candy."
She can pull off a Sunday dress and a rebel look oh-so-well. And it's the kind of look I'm always trying to achieve. I want to be able to look effortlessly chic in a flowy floral print dress with a pair of Mary Janes or cute ballet flats, and in a vintage shirt, a pair of denim jeans, and boots. So far, I think I can only achieve the latter but minus the boots, though.
Her outfits in the red carpet aren't short on elegance too. The black Dior jumpsuit that she wore during the 2015 Paris Fashion Week is freakin' gorgeous! I just love the off-shoulder drama going on. Also, the red dress she wore for BAFTA 2016 is the bomb! I think you can never really go wrong with a red dress. I mean, I wore red gowns for both proms in high school and red dresses for two formal events in college. And I loved each and every one of them! It's such a classy and elegant color.
I guess you guys can pretty much tell now that I'm all for a classic, minimalist, clean and polished look that's both comfortable and stylish. These women's outfits are what motivates me to stock up on timeless items in primary colors such as "the little black dress" and the crisp white polo. I'm also trying to love certain patterns too. Stripes are definitely my favorite but as of late, my closet is filled with so many B&W or white and blue striped shirts. It's not cute anymore (yes self!).
Anyway, what about you guys? Who are your all-time favorite style inspirations? What kind of look are you trying to achieve? Oh and what are your closet staples? Let's talk about it in the comments section below! ;)
